Edging up towards the borders of Laos and Myanmar, Northern Thailand preserves a mysterious charm, boasting some of Thailand’s most beautiful scenery, with fertile plains, lush river valleys, mountain country, and refreshing waterfalls.

Chiang Mai is located on the banks of the Ping River in the Mae Sa Valley is the regions largest city and Thailand’s cultural capital. Close to the Myanmar border is Mae Hong Son, long isolated from the rest of Thailand by its mountain peaks but now accessible and attracting tourists for its spectacular scenery and numerous hilltribe communities including the Karen, famed for their elongated necks.

Those wanting some adventure and to soak up some real Thai culture will enjoy Northern Thailand. Chiang Mai is overlooked by Doi Suthep mountain and the highly revered temple of Wat Prathat Doi Suthep at its peak offers superb views of the surrounding countryside.

The trip to the top can be made either by funicular or by a challenging flight of nearly 400 steps. The banisters of the grand staircase depict a giant serpent which winds its way down to end in a magnificent dragon’s head.

Elephant trekking is one of the regions biggest draws and has become a big tourist attraction.
